Ember Hollow

★★★★★ 4.6 Editor rating

Ember Hollow surprised me. Mobile RPGs usually cut corners on the story, but this one actually made me care about the little town I was slowly rebuilding between dungeon runs. Combat is turn-based and readable, with a nice depth to how you chain elemental attacks together without it ever feeling like a spreadsheet.

What I liked most is the pacing. You clear a stretch of cave, come back up, spend your loot fixing a bridge or reopening a shop, and every visit the village looks a bit more alive. It gives the grind a point. There's no aggressive nagging to spend anything either, which is rare and very welcome.

It does ask for real time — this isn't a five-minute game — but the auto-save is generous and picks up right where you left off. On a long trip it was easily the thing I reached for most.
